Withington found the storyline challenging because he had to play to storyline so John would not be seen as betraying Gina. John is close to giving up when Marilyn suddenly remembers their wedding day. Once recovered, Marilyn and John decide to renew their wedding vows. However, Marilyn suffers doubts and tells John about her desire to travel overseas. John accepts Marilyn's decision and gives her a plane ticket. Marilyn then changes her mind about the vow renewal and they go through with the ceremony. After Jett leaves for military school, Marilyn and John try to become foster parents, but are initially turned down because of Marilyn's history with Nicole's son.
The predicament becomes more difficult when John lies to Gina about spending an evening spent drinking with Marilyn Chambers . Withington told Erin Miller from TV Week that Gina thinks that Marilyn is after John, despite his protests that she is wrong. Withington explained that "John tries it on rather foolishly and then hates himself for what he has done". He also noted that they were keen to not portray Marilyn as a "home wrecker", but she does like John. He also teased that the storyline would continue with more "high drama" for the three characters.
When Jordan's father gets out of prison, John advises Jordan not to be too hard on Aaron and encourages Jordan in giving his father a second chance. Aaron returns John and Marilyn's things and makes up with Jordan, who decides to give his father a second chance and move with him back to the city. Jordan says goodbye to John and Marilyn, thanking them for taking care of him and making him part of their family. Jordan was an only child and lived in Darwin with his father, Aaron until he was 8 years old and they moved to the city.
