When Xavier finds out that his parents are adopting Jett, he was happy and one night he calls Jett as he wants to talk to his new brother. However when Gina dies, Xavier returns to Summer Bay for the funeral. Xavier comforts Jett and as he returns to Gosford, he asked their next-door neighbour Casey Braxton to look out for Jett for him. After Jett leaves for military school, Marilyn and John try to become foster parents, but are initially turned down because of Marilyn's history with Nicole's son.

Early life
Jett is happy when VJ returns and they begin catching up. Jett introduces VJ to Nina, but they reveal that they hate each other as VJ believes Nina stole a Pokémon card he owned in primary school. When VJ asks Jett to choose between him and Nina, Jett chooses Nina. Richard relents and a court date is set to make the adoption official.
At the reception, Jett asks them to adopt him and the adoption is finalised a couple of weeks later. John was not happy when Chris told him that Josh Barrett spray-painted a mural on the wall of the Surf Club for his girlfriend, Evelyn MacGuire . Jett, Marilyn and the residents of the Bay thought it was nice, but John and Chris disagrees and attempts to clean it off. John married Jenena and he became stepfather to Trey. When Trey is institutionalised after suffering a breakdown, John and Jenena's marriage breaks down and they both leave town.

Alf tells them they can't stay forever and they gave up, letting John to clean the wall. Jett accidently drove the go-cart into a tent, but luckily no one was hurt.
John organises the surf carnival and becomes competitive against the Mangrove River team. However the event ends in his competitor's captain, Gary collapsing from a heart attack. John supports Gina through her many problems with Xavier when he wants attend festivals and moves to the countryside. John is present during a fight which erupts in the surf club involving the River Boys. While recovering at home a storm crosses Summer Bay. John is left home alone when his spleen ruptures as a result of the attack.
When he learns John kissed Marilyn, Jett calls Marilyn a marriage wrecker. When VJ and his mother suddenly leave town, Jamie Sharpe questions Jett about where they have gone. She believes she is still married to Donald and does not recognise John at all. Irene, Leah and Roo try to help her, and Marilyn moves in with Irene while she recovers. John takes Marilyn out on a date, but his stories make her remember Sid and not him.
